Checking on the river

Was wondering what people thought about checking on the river when you think you have the best hand to see if some one will take a stab at it. Just had one on PS, I hit the str8 flush on the turn and had the nuts checked it, some one raised on the turn I called, I checked again on the river and he just checked. Ended up he had the A diamonds and there were 4 diamonds on board so he had a big hand as well. I asked if he would have called a big raise on the river and he said he would have. Just wondering what every one thought.

Did you think about reraising on the turn?

With the straight flush, why scare off a big hand or flush draw ?

I have no opinion.

As always, it depends on your read.

If you think he is relatively weak, and won't call a river bet anyway, then check it and hope he bluffs, thinking it's his only way to win the pot.

If you think he has a good hand that he will have to call with--i.e. in this case if you have him on the A-high flush--then bet the river. If you're lucky, he'll discount the possibility of the straight-flush and raise you. If not, then you're getting the same amount, but not affording him the chance to check behind. Also, hands like 2-pair or trips will often call but not lead out since they are vulnerable, so you're losing money by checking the river there.

I guess in summary, IMHO you should only check the nuts on the river when you are fairly certain that your opponent will bluff/bet with a hand that they would not call any bet with anyways.

Think id make a small to medium bet here because:
a.the worst way they fold, so same result as your check/check situation
b.they are very likely to call a small bet if they have any hand/flush worth calling with
c.in this case with him holding the A hi flush you may have got reraised, who knows.

Ive tried all ways of playing this:
the check which more often than not gets checked back,
The all in bet designed to look like a bluff has also got a call once or twice!

However the smallish value looking bet generally gets called or occasionally reraised.
I think this is the best EV move overall inmy opinion.

"Since he called your reraise preflop, his range can be narrowed to top 5"
