Straddle Raising

I've never quite figured out when a straddle raise makes sense, other than to intimidate weak tight players. Is a straddle raise ever a +EV play? It seems that a good player can easily defend the straddle raise by re-raising to isolate with any better than average hand. Can anyone give me more insight into this? Do any of the online sites allow straddle raising?

I've never seen it online, but once I had a guy sitting to my right + 1 seat do it every time he was UTG.

The best I can pull out of it, it's "gambling" for the poker player. You have no information on anyone, including your own hand. It's easily exploitable by a stronger hand... I loved it when my straddler came in when I got dealt AA, I made it 3 bets, someone in LP made it 4 bets, he capped (blind still) to 5 bets, and I flopped a set.

Nice.

Straddling is nothing more than a pot building technique. It is used to gain position on the pre-flop betting, since you are taking away the big blinds option also.

I have seen it used when an extremely tight player is in the BB also. He is more than likely going to fold or put in the extra bet with a bad hand. Putting him out of his element.

Does a lot of things.

1. Like RJ said, makes a tight BB fold or play a hand he normally wouldn't.
2. Reduces the DB factor by making folks with crap hands put in more money.
3. Disguises the straddler's hand in the sense that he can just check when the action gets to him... checking puts him in a range of anything from 2-7o thru 99.
4. Occasionally you'll get a tilter who hates this sort of thing, he'll feel the need to play back against the straddler, usually with a marginal hand.

That said I really don't like straddle bets.

I do something similar, though. If I'm in the SM or BB [when the SB has folded] I have a habit of checking in the dark before the dealer lays out the flop. So I could have hit absolutely anything and I'm now in position to represent that if someone bets into me.

Gydyon and I had some fun with that in Mayhem. He'd check in the dark in the SB to be funny and I'd check in the BB right behind him. Actually restricted the bets of the table somewhat, especially on a junk flop, like when someone is thinking outloud and says, "You guys could have ANYTHING... I check."

Except the one time I did it, flopped trips, and he turned a straight, but I digress....

I live straddle several times in an evening for two reasons.

1. To loosen up a overly tight game.
2. To cover up the fact that I only play two hands an orbit, i.e., demonstrate a level of looseness that will get me some action when I have big hands.

Two or three times in a four hour session is usually enough, so an extra investment of $12 on the night i(in 1/2NL -- I would not generally straddle in a higher limit game) s usually a sound one in my mind.

UTG min raises before the cards are dealt. He then gets the option to raise after the BB.
