Tipping the Dealer

So I'm off this weekend to Tunica to play some poker.

It will be my first time in a B&M playing poker. I will most likely play the lower limits. That being said, what is the standard tip for the dealer? 1bone per winning hand? I did a search on here but couldn't find anything. Not going with any delusions of winning lots, but will obviously try to play a solid game and have a good time.Any other advice or etiquette(sp?) knowledge would be appreciated.

When I played in Vegas a couple months ago for the first time, I took my queue from the other players. A buck per winning hand and $2-3 if you take a big pot seemed to work.

I tip according to the situation. In a 2/4 game, if I'm doing well and I pick up a pot that's at least $15 or so, I'll tip $1. But if I've been losing for hours and I'm down to my last $10 and I win a $6 pot, I'm not going to tip anything. If I'm really up and I scoop a really nice pot of maybe $30 or more, I'll throw the dealer $2 or $3, depending on how much fun I'm having and if I think that the dealer is making things fun.

Whenever I finish in the money in a tournament, I'll usually tip about 5%.

How do you tip in a tournament? I thought tournament chips had no value. Do you have to have chips from a live game, or do you does it involve winnings?

If you come in the money and go to collect, they'll be happy to explain it to you :)

is that a single table tournament. if it's a multiple table which dealer do you give the 5% too? Just curious as I hadn't even though about tipping in the tournaments.

Not along the lines of tipping but something I was unaware of and maybe it's just one casino but here is a rule I found interesting.

Before I started my first tourney out in Vegas the dealer made it very clear that if you brought chips out past your cards you are required to at least call the bet at hand. If you would like to raise, you should announce it before you lay chips out in front of your cards.

You can never go wrong tipping $1 a pot, which is the general standard at low limits. Everyone has their own personal variations, which may include:

-tipping larger on large pots
-not tipping on tiny pots or split pots (or on $1/2 tables, tipping 50 cents)
-not tipping when running bad
-not tipping bad dealers or badly dealt hands
-not tipping at all (very bad form)

Myself, I just always tip $1, or $2 to $3 on a larger pot.

As far as other etiquette, just remember to play in turn. People play out of turn all the time at lower limits, and the dealers are used to it, so don't worry too much if you accidentally do it.

Other things: don't talk about your hand before it's over, don't give indications before your turn that you are going to fold (and watch other people, since they will do these things), don't string raise (just say call or raise). And obviously, don't throw your cards or berate the dealer (like I need to tell you that!).

Aside from that, just have fun! Your hand will be shaking when you put in that first raise, I guarantee it!

Though I don't play in B&M casinos, here's my thoughts on tipping the dealer. DON'T! We all know that we're behind the 8-ball to eak out profits against the casino's rake. At small stakes let's arbitrarily say that your average pot is between 20-30 dollars. Every time you take down a pot, the casino takes 2-3 dollars. Doesn't seem like much? Of course not, because we are figuring it wrong!

The casino rake is not paid on only the pots you won. It is 10% of the total amount wagered by all players. On pots you contested but lost, even though the rake was taken out of someone else's pot, all amounts you wagered were raked at 10%.

So how much money are you losing to the casino? Let's say you see 20 percent of the flops. Two every pass of the button. and wager an average of $15 per hand You are losing an average of $3 every time the button passes. At 3 rounds per hour, you are losing $9.

Experts say that the rule of thumb is: look to win about one big bet per hour. At 3-6, you should look to win $6 per hour. But since you must compensate for the $9 an hour you lost to the casino rake, you have to win almost 3 big bets per hour to net the $6.

Back to tipping. Let's say that statistically you win one pot every pass of the button. You tip 1-3 dollars per pot, let's say an average of $2. You are tipping the dealer $6 per hour.

WHOA! BACK UP. You are tipping the dealer exactly the amount you hope to win per hour if you overcome the $9 per hour the house is raking. Does this seem like a recipe for success?

Now, I know everyone's going to beat the "Dealer's work hard" drum. But in this senario, I would never feel bad about not tipping the dealer. The casino takes a huge profit from the rake but then there's this tipping code on top of it? Where was I when they voted on that scam?

Now, other players may look down on you, and the dealer may give you a subtle "where's the tip" look. But understanding the math involved makes you the sucker if you tip anyway. I don't need the approval of other players or the dealers to know that I'm a decent person and nor should you.

I would appreciate some analysis from you guys.

Thanks for reading.

Dealers are working for tips. They are paid very little if not for the tips, and in some casinos they even have to pool tips. If everyone followed your advice the rake would go up(its usually capped). Dont be so tight with your cash. Tipping the dealer is part of the price of playing poker.

The Dealer and The Casino are two seperate entities.

Anything we can do to get an edge on the casino is fair game, in my opinion. They are raking in the big bucks.

The dealer is a working stiff, just like most of us. You wouldn't think of not tipping a waitress at a restaurant just because you think the restaurant is already making enough profit, would you? They rely on tips to make a living.

If you are playing the game to make $6 and hour your need to get a better job. Also, if you can't afford to tip you shouldn't play.
