poker chips?

I was wondering if people could let me know on where i can buy good clay poker chips (online or otherwise). The ability to customize would be cool.

Not the composite metal inserted ones that everyone seems to be selling, but the authentic chips that casinos use.

If anyone can offer their opinion or their experiences I'd greatly appreciate it.

I think a serious-looking chip adds a LOT to a home game. I am still working at getting my neighborhood game well-established, and "real" chips should make a positive difference. But if you want something better than plain-ol' red, white and blue, the choices are suprisingly limited. I have found two decent sources:

www.casinocom.com 's manufacturer has been bought out, and the new owners are quitting the retail business. But they still have a lot in stock, which you can buy on a close-out basis.

pokerchips.com is an old, small company up in Maine that will make chips to your spec, imprinted with your design. They don't have as many colors as casinocom.com, and it's hard to tell from their color chart what the colors will actually look like "in the flesh". But I think this is probably your best bet if you want a custom chip.

vip trades.com is cheapest for good quality- gamblers general store ggs.com will gold emboss for you . high priced though. custom chips with multicolor designs are gonna have minimum purchase way more than you need, way over priced too.

Just a report on my progress since my last post on this topic. I had been trying to get a neighborhood game going for a while. But you know how it goes, guys have a great time if they come out but it's hard to budge them from their couches for something that's not either a novelty or a habit. It was tricky getting the game over that hump, to get it established. But once I got some real chips, the whole "aura" of the game improved. Guys took the game more seriously, so they enjoyed it more. I think a real clay/ceramic chip, in some decent colors, is very much worth the investment.

This may be a somewhat biased post because I am the owner of this company, but if you're looking for the highest quality poker chips you can buy for a home game, you should check out BuyPokerChips.com. We offer a 10 gram, brass-flake weighted, 3-edge spot, compression-molded, vintage casino-quality clay poker chip without any goofy branding on them. They come in 7 denominations ($0.50, $1, $2, $5, $25, $100, and $500), and are in the standard casino colors. The chips have the distinctive clay touch and feel that can only be found in real casino chips.

You can find a lot of cheap chips out there, but you're typically going to get what you pay for. If they cost $100-$150 for a set of 500 poker chips, they're most likely going to be injection molded plastic, and feel like it.

Quite an old post, but just in case you or anyone else is looking for chips, some of the best deals and prices around can be found at:
http://www.pokerchipmart.com
Their product selection is growing and I've personally been in their warehouse - they stock a ton of products. They don't do custom chips, but they do have the standards and are constantly running special packages.

Just so everyone understands what's going on from our manufacturers in China... there are FIRST quality chips-- and there are 2nds. The most difference is around 2 cents per chip but as prices keep falling its for a reason-- many small China manufacturers are producing crap.
There's a reason one importer pays 10.00 MORE for his product then someone else-- and thats chip quality. For the average user who will never be able to have a first quality set and a 2nd quality set side by side, most will think they got a value for their money and be happy.
And they would be right. Some people wont spend the extra 10.00 for the better set-- and probably never even know where to buy the better set.
We were GONNA bring in the 2nds just to comete with pricing, but after looking at the chips we shook our heads and said- we're not gonna do it. If our resellers want to handle the crap and save 10.00 ( actually it's closer to 6.00 ) so be it.
Sad thing is-- MOST of the smaller importers dont even know what theyre selling... theyre price driven.
Also-- the reject ratio is around 10 per cent-- and these chips SHOULD be discarded-- but the chinese put them into larger orders-- go through a set of 500 chips and I bet you'll find quite a few scratched, mold images appearing in thr chip, colors running, etc.
A first quality chip set has NO defects-- but.. theyre more expensive.
( more to follow)

Also-- many people have been emailing me re: 100 per cent CPAY poker chips on ebay selling for around 129.00.
Folks-- theyre NOT 100 per cent Clay-- there isnt ONE chinese manufacturer making pure clay chips. The ones we tested that were supposed to be 100 per cent Clay-- werent. Not even close.
We took the chip apart and there is an aluminum disk with a pure plastic support ring around it. The thin shell with the printing- we lit on fire-- and it melted and burned. Clay fires without melting.
There is however SOME additive-- perhaps a ceramic-- in the chip-- but the weight of the chip SHELL was less then 1 gram meaning the balance of 11.5gms was the aluminum and plastic support ring.
There's a reason Paulsons cost what they cost-- the patent is online if you want to do some interesting reading as to how they make the chips-- its involved and MUCH different then coinjection molding which the ABS chip manuf. use.
With that said-- I got a 7 and a three off suit-- I'm ALL IN!!

Joe, i've got a GREAT idea!!!

You sell me the chips at cost plus shipping, and i'll tell all my friends about you and they'll buy their sets from you at full price!

Ok...so now that we've agreed here is what i'm interested in.

Either 1 set 500 clay 3 stripped:
200 white
150 red
100 blue
50 black

OR 1 set 500 clay suited:
200 white
150 red
100 blue
50 black

What do yah say? Looking at a chinese import/export site i'm looking at close to 30-40 bucks total with shipping and handling... do we have a deal?!

I just got some 11.5g chips from a site called www.5stardeal.com.
They have a whole section of casino and poker supplies and might have what you're looking for.
They also will "Hot Stamp" something into the chip for you for that personallized look.

For customized chips either pokerchips.com or Gamblersgeneralstore.com. But you're looking at about $.85 each. I bought chips from 5stardeal.com and had them hotstamped, but I'm not impressed with either the chips or the company. Sometimes ebay is the best place for those cheaper chips.

i'm interested in getting some casino style chips also, i was looking at the ones from 5stardeal.com, and they looked very affordable with good quality, so I'm disappointed that i saw a comment in here that said the customer wasn't satisfied.

would whoever posted that about the product they purchased from 5star be more specific in the comments as far as why they weren't satisfied? were they poor quality? was the color bad? was the shipping too long?...why weren't they any good?

would someone who's bought some chips off the web who likes what they got mind posting some comments as to where they got them, what style they were, and why they like them?

I just ordered a sampler (7 chips) from nevadajacks.net, and i'll let y'all know how that went. the only thing, is i'd prefer a more customizable chip than the ones they offer. the ones from pokerchips.com look very good with lots of choices, but i'm not eager to throw down a couple hundred bucks on a set of chips without knowing how good they are.

Sure. I won two auctions on ebay for 500 six stripe chips from 5-star, only to find out they didnt' have them in stock so I had to get the suited chips. OK. Well then they didn't have any black so I waited like 3 weeks. Still nothing. Finally they came in they stamped them and sent them to me. Well the hotstamping is really really thin and some of them were blank. I sent them back to have them re-done or to get my money back but no such luck.

In the end it took 3 months to finally get my cases and chips, and they never sent the 2 chip racks I ordered, and then had the nerve to leave me negative feedback.

For that kind of money I would check viptrades.com or pokerchipsusa, you can see their hotstamping is better.

I am interested in the nev. jacks chips too. I'm probaby going to just keep mine until I can afford 1,000 for a custom designed set.

Hope this helps.

I bought the chip set of 500 diamond chips (the cheapest) with the black case and 5 dice, 2 decks of cards. I am very satisfied with them for $75.00 total inlcuding shipping. Some idiots on Ebay were winning the same thing with a winning bet of 75 plus they still had to pay $15 shipping and handling.

Anyway I thought 5stardeal.com was great.

I won an eBay auction from 5stardeal and also had a few problems. They sent me 450 of the 500 chips, becasue they did not have the 50 gray that I ordered, even though their website said that they were in stock. I waited a MONTH before I finally got sick of waiting and changed my order to 50 black. I made them send me some free cards as reparation, but I still wasn't wholly satisfied. As for the chips, they are decently nice and all, but they are clay composite, so they have a metal insert and sound like a half dollar when you toss it on the table. But the professional series (full clay) are 2x as expensive and don't have nearly the selection. So there you go.

Unfortunately, I believe Paul-Son closed their retail businesses after they merged with the French company Bourgogne et Grasset (“B&G”) and its subsidiary, the Bud Jones Company. In years past I made several purchases of chips and other supplies at their old stores in both Las Vegas and AC.

i promptly got my sample pack of nevada jacks chips. i'm very impressed by the product and speed of delivery. they have a very professional feel look and feel to them. however, when i went to the site to check on the price, i'm disappointed to notice they offer packs of 25 chips for $25 dollars. the price is the same for all colors and denomonations. although the chips are above average quality and the inlay design and mold is casino-quality, but the spot edging is the standard 3 spot and don't offer any color, or spot options. for a dollar per chip, i would expect more options in color or spot edging.

It is important for you to understand the following from "The Chip Store.com"

Authentic means that these are the very same chips that you will find in casinos the world over. There are 60 million of these chips in play today. Poker Chips indicate how the chips are intended to be used by most of our customers. Clay, well this is an interesting thing and we'd like to share. Since the 1920's clay poker chips have been a composite CERAMIC chip! Clay was expensive, hard to work with and even harder to make last. They could not be cleaned and were easily rubbed down and destroyed in normal playing conditions.

Why do we and others still call them clay? Simply put, because that is the only way people know to ask for Authentic Casino Type Poker Chips. You will notice throughout the site we use the terms Ceramic and Clay in combination or alone. The fact is that they are the same thing. Our Pro Series poker chips are the exact chips that you play in casinos all across America. There is one more thing that you should know about Chip Store products, our poker chips and cases are proudly Made in the United States of America.

Any chip that you find will be a composite, THE MAJORITY are cheap, flawed with metal inserts and its price will reflect it. For the BEST chips out there you will need to prepare to spend $0.70-$1.50 per chip and you can locate the Best AVAILABLE at Chipco.com, The Chip Store.com and Kardwell.com....

Good Luck with your quest....

For what it is worth, I have had unfavorable experiences with KARDWELL.COM and THECHIPSTORE.COM. Their customer service, and integrity IMHO, leaves a LOT to be desired.

THECHIPSTORE.COM took an order, which I paid through PayPal. They did not fill the order correctly, only sending me half of what I paid for. When I wrote to complain, they all of a sudden did not want to communicate any further. I gave them at least 2 weeks and many e-mails, and they would not reply at all. I had to raise a huge stink with PayPal before they would act in any way. I did eventually get my money back, but it is insane that I should have to act like that for them to reply. They were very helpful in the beginning, but once they got my $$$ they stopped communicating.

KARDWELL.COM was hit and miss ... I sent them a long e-mail requesting specific chip samples and some information, which I would gladly pay for, and I never heard back. After a second e-mail - about a week later I received a print catalog. After a bitter call and e-mail, they were "sorry" they didn't read my message and reply appropriately. I finally got someone who acted happy to send me samples of the particular chips I was looking for, and it has been two weeks since they promised to send me my items. Repeated e-mails and voice messages since have gone unanswered. I guess my simple 600-800 chip order was not important enough for their honesty or their time. *sigh*

1. www.thechipstore.com

These are the only two I know of that offer real ProTech casino style poker chips for sale. ProTech are the actual chips that all casino's are using today.

If the companies out there:

Buypokerchips.com carry great "real" chips already for shipment.
Nevadajacks has "real" chips and their own custom design all are very nice.
Thechipstore.com and homepokerchips.com carry custom order Pro-tech chips.

You will pay over $1.00 a piece or more for them usually but it is worth it. I have played with buypokerchips and nevadajack poker chips and they are so superior to the Dice, Suited, Diamond, 9gm Diamond sets out their are not in the same league.
The cheapest alternative is the "james bond" series and all clay fan of cards series chips that are on the same blanks from 5star and others.

I have sets of "dice" chips, diamond chips, high roller denominated chips, fan of cards clay, and am still going to upgrade to the custom series soon. Together I have paid $1600 dollars for the different sets and wish I just got the custom ones first. Live and learn. If you got the money, use it on good set. I have given mine to friends and the others have taken my advice and upgraded. At least I get to play with the "great" chips when I with them :)

It's all about budget and feel. We play a $4/$8 game and it is worth it to have good chips since I have already made most of it back. If you are playing a nickle, dime game or even quarters - you will spend more for chips than you even did on the game itself. Just something to think about.

Real Players play real chips is a great way to think.

he had an open ended straight on the flop.. depending on how you played it on the flop, there's a very good chance he'll call any bet you put out. and no, he didn't need runner runner to beat you, just 1 card.

I'd recommend checking out brandsonsale.com. I just picked up a couple of clay poker chip sets from them the other day. The shipping was a little high, but the chips were as advertised. I'll probably pick up some poker table top for my weekend games.

I won a couple auctions from 5stardeal; here's the details:
500 9g for $40 + $18 S/H, 300 9g for $17 + $11 S/H. Both came with alum case, 2 decks and dice. I also chose the colors.
Chips are okay, cases are good and heavy. 5stardeal shipped seven days after charging my credit card. It now appears they aren't selling as much on ebay, many negative comments. I probably wouldn't have gone through them had I known. These will be good for now, but I'm sure down the road I'll upgrade.

I have about 1000 paulson poker chips for sale. Many of which were used in various casinos, be prepared to pay though, paulson brand (hat and cane mold) is used in 85% of all casinos and are no longer available to the public. I won't let mine go for at least a buck a piece.

I originally posted this thread, back in August... who knew that it would still be kicking in May....

Since so much has been offered in terms of advice, I feel i should give you my experience to date to possibly help those of you looking to buy custom chips in the future.

In August, after doing multiple searches on the internet I settled on pokerchips.com. I contacted them via phone and gave them my request. Basically my request was to get my college logo or something very close to it on my chips (FYI i'm a proud oregon duck alum). The customer service was very professional, almost corporate like, and they told me that while they could not duplicate the logo (for trademark reasons), they would put something together that would pass.

During this process, they confessed to me how busy they were and that an order might take 8-10 weeks. It then took their art department about 2 weeks to get me a proof. The proof looked good... but because they took so long i had called thechipstore.com just to see what they could offer.

Chipstore's service guy - Dan (the owner of the company) - gave me that feeling that I was special and that he was going to do whatever he could to get me my chips. He and I both called my college trademark department and actually go permission to use their special font.... Dan's favorite line is "I want to see you get these chips more than you do."

Since i've always been a sucker for great customer service, i cancelled my order w/ pokerchips, and went w/ the chipstore. Then the delays started.... what was going to take 4-6 weeks ended up taking 8-10. One batch of chips were severely cut off center and i had to return them which took another 3-4 weeks.

Fast forward to the March 04... i wanted a re-order of another 100 chips and it was suppose to take 6-weeks, but when the date arrived Dan told me that it would take another 6 weeks or longer.

It has been increasingly difficult to get ahold of Dan nowadays... and to his defense the poker explosion is continually growing. I basically believe that these companies cannot keep up w/ the demand. Which is no excuse for poor service.... but it is the honest truth that we can all relate to.

All that being said, i absolutely love my chips. And i am so very grateful that i could actually get my college logo on my chips.... i just wish my last re-order of 100 chips would come in soon!

To all of you still in the hunt for a personal set... good luck. Quite a few more companies have been popping up on the internet lately. Also, i've played w/ the common metal inserted chips and they are respectable.

Thanks to all that have responded.

I just won an auction on eBay for 500 11.5g chips + case for $49 from 5stardeal.com. I am going to get them on Monday since the company is about 20 minutes from my house. Would those of you that have gotten these chips (either the 11.5g Suited or Dice chips) say that they are a good deal for $.10 a piece?

Just to let folks know.. I worked Toy Fair in New York this past year and Bicycle had a booth where the showed there new line of WPT liscenced poker chips. They were absolutely gorgeous. They were white with the WPT logo on the front and I believe they were 13g and come in a nice looking rack. The spokesperson at the booth thought they would sell for around $70 - 80 for 300 (I think) and that they're due to come out around Christmas 2004.

I have about 1000 paulson poker chips for sale. These chips are authentic poker chips, paulson is the same company that supplies about 85% of the casinos out there. The ones I have have the traditional hat and cane mold, some are old and some are almost brand new but ALL are in great condition. If your interested they will cost about $1.00 to $1.25 a piece, I can get you photos. mikethemug

I went through a similar hunt for high quality chips awhile back. I see a lot of postings on here for the 11.5 gram 'dice' chips. If you want good casino quality chips, avoid them at all costs. They are terrible. Better than walmart wafer chips yes, but nowhere near what you find in the casino. It's just my personal opinion, but in terms of quality, if you want the best chips you can get in terms of look and feel, seek the following. I've ranked them in order of my personal opinion of their quality.

1. Paul-son - unfortunately unavailable to the public anymore, the one and only 'top hat and cane' chips are the most widely used 'real' casino chips you can get. This seems to be changing however, as chipco chips are gaining wider use. (they are the smooth, full printed chips that some of the newer casinos such as the palms are now using) In my opinion though, nothing beats paulsons.

2. Nevada Jacks (www.nevadajacks.net) I have a friend that has a set of 1000 of these, and quality wise they are every bit as nice if not nicer than paulsons. (I still prefer paulsons for the authenticity factor, but nevadajacks chips are essentially just as nice)

3. Bud Jones - Bud Jones was bought out by Paulson, I believe, and unfortunately went the way of the dinosaur as far as public access is concerned. A lot of players don't like them for any number of reasons, be it the metal 'coin' inlays or the more plastic feeling material. Personally I think that appearance wise they are gorgeous chips. The metallic feel they have is the only reason they're 3rd on my list.

4. T.R. king - AKA king's Crown chips, (www.trking.com) Very high quality chips made from the original kings crown molds. I have a set of these myself (got a good deal on a used set) and they are extremely nice chips with traditional denomination colors.

5. Pokerchips.com clay chips. Also very very nice chips. One of the great things about pokerchips.com, you can order custom edgespot colors. VERY cool.

6. Chipco - www.chipco.com, www.thechipstore.com. Chipco chips are distinct in that they are completely smooth and have a fully printable surface. They feel very nice and have somewhat rounded edges (some people like that, some dont). I've noticed these chips in more and more casinos recently. If you want to get some really cool, large artwork done on your chips, they are the way to go. I personally like the look and feel of the traditional clay chips better, which is why these are 6th on my list. Lots of people really like these a lot though, and for good reason, as they are indeed very nice.

Other chips that you can consider if youre on a budget would be the seashell mold chips that you see in the 'fake' james bond / casino de ithmus sets (the real casino de ithsmus chips are paulsons - buyer beware if considering a set of these on ebay), and of course, the very cheap '11.5 gram' dice chips. If you have to go cheap, try to at least get the seashell chips as they are MUCH nicer than the dice chips. Anyway, to sum it up, if you want nice casino quality chips, any of the top 6 I listed should satisfy your needs. When comparing to the lower quality chips like the card and dice sets, theres simply no contest. Expensive yes, but a 1 time, lifetime investment. Of my hobbies, its been the least expensive. (at least thats how i rationalize spending $500 on poker chips ;) )

Hope this info helps those looking for good chips!

Ladd

I've decided against getting custom chips for right now.

I knew if I got them, I would have to get an extra half dozen of every denomination and toss it in storage. That's the thing about custom chips...they're custom - you can't dial up ebay and order spares.

I'm not sure how I would lose one of them...maybe I'd be diddling around the house twirling chips and one would fall down a cooling vent...doesn;t matter. I lose things. I forget where I put my keys, I forget where I put my wallet....I lose stuff all the time and honestly, I just dont trust myself. I am too much of a moron to keep all 1,000 pieces of a collectiuon together for the next 40 years. It just won't happen.

And what's worse than having a perfectly matched, $1,000 set of...err, 999 chips.

I am going to go with a mass produced clay set for the sake of "replacability." If I get a set of "Jacks" or "Bonds" and one turns up missing, I can just hop on their website or Ebay and order up a couple more. Plus, if someday I decide to go with a different set, the mass produced ones are going to have a better resale.

My two cents. After some research, I decided to purchase Casino de Isthmus chips. My friend has the Crystal Park chips by Paulson, and in my opinion, Paulsons are the best.

I decided against the following for various reasons:

pokerchips.com, buypokerchips.com. pretty nice chips, but quality slightly below paulsons and just as expensive. also seem a bit lighter.

chipco, protech chips. nice chips, but i just like the old style chips with the edge spots the best. personal preference.

didnt even consider those cheap "dice" chips. in my opinion, if you are going to have a serious game, those are a joke. but if you are just playing occasionally for fun, then i can see the cost justifies the purchase...

I really wanted a set of the Paulson Isthmus "Bond" chips. I recently bid on some on eBay and they ended up going for about $1.75 per chip which was way out of my budget. I'm kicking myself for not buying a set of 1000 of the Paulson Starburst chips for under $500. They were heavily used, but with a little sterling's cleaner I could have turned around and sold half of them and got my money back. Oh well, I'm still searching. I have some sample chips from chipco and pokerchips.com, but I really want some Paulsons!

Actually, it is $2 less since the 500 set is $81.95 on AceHighSupply, though with shipping it is cheaper for me from AceHigh.

What sold me is the quality: http://acehighsupply.com/images/products/chips/Suit_Compare.jpg I have a set that has chips that look like the chip on the right. Also, when I look at close-up shots of suit chips from other dealers, they look like the chip on the right.

I am going to a wait to see more pictures and see the price of their new chip, though. I don't need anything more than the 11.5g chips, but would like something unique (not dice or suits).

I would love to have a set of the Archetype chips from buypokerchips.com.

They are probably my favorite chips, though I have never felt them before.

Im new to poker though and I have only been to a casino one time so I dont think I know the difference between the casino chips and these imported ones everyone is downing.

Im going with a set of the imports because, at this point, I simply cant justify spending the money it takes to buy a set of the chips I would like (Archetypes from buypokerchips.com).

Like everything else... its a trade off.

But to buypokerchips, I think youve created some great looking chips. I wish I could afford them.

I bought a decent set on Ebay from seller plegend2001. I'm not promoting him, just referencing my experience.

Chips were decent quality and I got 1000 11.5g chips and aluminum case for $88(pick late hour auctions for better prices) plus $30 shipping. I even got to customize chips from the 5 basic colors.

Customizing is nice, but if these chips last long enough I wouldn't want to put money denominations or personalization on them if I want to pass them on to someone else.

Check out http://www.ultimatepokersupplies.com. They can pretty much create any design you want with a chip that weighs in at 11.5 grams.

Try looking at www.chiptalk.net , though, they are mostly collectors of unusual or custom chips. If you are looking for custom chips, that is a good place to look.

Chips are really a matter of personal preference. The clay chips are the old school standard, but the ceramic chips offer more options. I have a custom monogrammed set of clay chips from http://www.thepokerchipcompany.com They are really nice.

There are a number of places to get cheap chips, which does not matter as few people notice much about the chips. www.5stardeal.com is a cheap place.

You can also try ebay, just watch the shipping costs.
